Coffee Finca Tour – Coffee may be Colombia’s #2 biggest export (behind crude petroleum and coal briquettes), but visiting a coffee farm should be #1 on your list of things to do in Medellín.
Coffee is an integral part of the lives of nearly two thirds of the world’s population. Colombia is the third highest producer of coffee behind Brazil and Vietnam. Colombian coffee is known for producing a mild, well-balanced bean. A majority of Colombia’s coffee is produced to the west of Medellín in a region called the coffee triangle. Coffee production in Colombia is also found on several fincas (family farms) near Medellín.
OLSA International works with an authentic working sustainable coffee farm in Sopetrán (about an hour-and-a-half from the OLSA campus). These small coffee (and cacao) farmers work in cooperation with the indigenous population providing them with jobs and paying fair wages. Enjoy a day learning about and participating in the entire coffee process and the lifestyle of the farmers that produce it.
The itinerary for this excursion is:
- Meet at OLSA International at 8:00 am for a traditional Colombian breakfast; arepa with cheese, scrambled eggs and a cup of coffee / chocolate
- Board our transport bound for Sopetrán
- Tour Sopetrán’s town square and newly restored cathedral
- Board our country van as we climb the mountain to the coffee farm
- Have a quick refreshment before we mount the mules and head for the coffee fields
- Once at the coffee fields, learn about / participate in the coffee picking process
- Take your recently picked coffee back to the farmhouse and learn how coffee is processed from bean to cup
- After the lesson, relax in the company of the farm’s family while you enjoy an authentic Colombian farm lunch
- After lunch there will be a “cata de café” to learn the proper methods to brew coffee to obtain the best results
- After a few more stories we’ll board the transit and return to OLSA around 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
